Democratic               system               of               governance               is               supposed               to               be               at               the               pinnacle               of               political               hierarchy.

Those               who               do               not               have               such               a               system               yearn               for               it               but               those               who               achieve               it               are               frustrated               that               it               does               not               deliver               majority               will               even               when               leaders               are               elected               through               direct               referendum               or               elected               representatives.

The               government               is               expected               to               look               after               the               interests               of               the               voting               public               but               the               latter               soon               feels               short               changed               as               their               interests               do               not               seem               to               matter               when               decisions               are               made.

Or               often               decisions               that               matter               just               get               delayed,               which               sometimes               translate               into               worse               than               wrong               decisions!

The               expectations               of               the               public               are               natural.

They               vote               in               leaders               based               on               election               manifesto,               leadership               qualities               and               other               criteria.

But               the               world               realities               have               become               so               fluid               that               decisions               have               to               be               based               on               other               nations'               interests               too               and               through               consensus.

And               sadly,               the               leaders               and               their               parties               are               also               beholden               to               special               interests               and               pressure               groups.
In               developed               societies,               mostly               western               countries,               there               are               standards               of               basic               behavior               and               accountability.

There               is               also               the               rule               of               law.

A               proper               justice               system               is               in               place,               but               what               about               nascent               democracies               trying               to               find               their               feet?

They               seem               lost               and               grapple               with               a               system               after               escaping               from               the               wolves               to               find               haven               in               an               order               based               on               free               will.

The               wolves               are               still               lurking               but               in               sheep's               clothing!

When               people               lose               hope               they               could               resurface               with               a               vengeance               and               become               their               last               resort               to               get               even               with               failed               democratic               leaders               in               those               countries.

There               are               communist               parties               contesting               elections               or               others               with               strong               leftist               leanings.

Then               there               are               dictatorships               and               army               rule,               interspersed               with               democracies               when               the               air               becomes               too               stifled,               like               in               Pakistan!
Most               poor               countries               are               not               out               of               the               woods               yet!

And               now               the               foundation               in               such               countries               are               under               threat               from               a               no-nonsense,               China.

Free               trade               and               globalization               have               made               democracies               unable               to               react               like               in               one               party               system               where               leaders               can               decide               and               then               if               need               be,               justify               their               actions               later!

In               democracies,               it               is               all               out               in               the               open.

Certain               debates               make               one               recall               -               if               you               have               friends               like               these,               you               don't               need               enemies!

All               dirty               linen               are               washed               in               public               and               the               leaders               have               to               stand               to               ridicule               even!
These               realities               may               be               par               for               the               course               for               well               established               democratic               countries               with               resources               to               fall               back               upon.

But               those               with               nothing               much               except,               may               be,               people               and               in               large               numbers               like               in               India,               it               is               always               a               touch               and               go               for               survival.

Will               they               slip               down               the               precipice?

Unlikely,               but               the               danger               lurks               in               most               countries.

Thailand               has               their               "Red               Shirts"               holding               rallies               bringing               daily               lives               to               a               standstill!
Obviously,               people               increasingly               feel               they               are               being               taken               for               a               ride.

At               least,               it               could               be               smoother               and               destination               clearer               but               uncertainties               rule.

Leaders               are               unable               to               deliver               on               their               promises,               as               simple               as               that!

Many               yearn               for               strong               leadership,               but               looks               like               time               has               taken               its               toll               on               those               who               used               to               lead               from               the               front               and               able               to               carry               the               ground!

We               need               overhaul               of               the               creaking               system,               but               who               holds               the               key?

The               people               obviously,               from               whom               some               with               great               skills               have               to               emerge               to               suit               their               countries.
The               one               touted               as               the               biggest               of               democracies               going               by               numbers,               India               is               struggling               along               to               make               sense               of               their               system               in               a               fast               changing               world.

The               general               public               wants               development               like               in               China               but               also               life               as               usual!

Full               freedom               of               press,               anyone               can               criticize               the               leaders               with               impunity               and               go               scot-free,               do               as               they               please               but               results               to               wow               the               world               like               the               neighboring               giant               under               one               party               rule               as               a               fait               accompli!

Looks               like               a               harassed               mother               with               a               child               bawling               away               asking               for               the               moon!

Obviously,               the               system               is               riddled               with               carpetbaggers               who               get               elected               by               fair               means               or               foul.

And               to               think               there               are               many               criminals               in               the               fray               able               to               control               vast               swathes               of               land,               playing               one               group               against               another               in               perpetuity!
As               long               as               the               fear               of               slipping               into               a               worse               odious               system               is               in               the               air,               democratic               system               will               limp               on.

But               sad               to               say,               the               common               man               is               ever               short-changed,               and               do               not               fault               him               if               he               is               sometimes               envious               of               other               systems               that               seem               to               deliver               at               the               cost               of               freedom               that               looks               a               like               mirage               and               rings               hollow               increasingly!
